New spending breakdown on mobile app

Have you noticed that on the desktop version of YNAB that Reports have been replaced by Reflect? Even better, on the mobile app, there’s a new Reflect option that provides an at-a-glance breakdown of your spending.

I feel that reports have never been YNAB’s strength. I don’t tend to use reports a lot and when I do, I tend to look at the YNAB Toolkit reports instead. YNAB’s shift from the idea of a report to the idea of reflecting on your spending is so useful, in my opinion. And it’s consistent with the YNAB method. On the desktop version, the reports haven’t actually changed. They just have a new, more accurate name. (Here’s more information on the Reflect/Reports on the desktop version.)

I don’t use the mobile app much, beyond occasionally glancing at categories before spending. My daily YNAB time is spent on the desktop version. But I checked out the new Reflect tab (formerly Reports) on the mobile app this morning and found the spending breakdown reflection to be really pleasing and informative. It allows you to see your categories by spending percentage and easily identify categories with greater inflow transactions than outflows. You can filter spending by categories and review total spending for prior months. (Here’s a knowledge base article on the new Reflect tab on the mobile app.)

This major update is being rolled out to users so if you haven’t seen the change yet, rest assured you will.

One of the great (and sometimes frustrating) things about YNAB is that it’s constantly improving. That’s great, for obvious reasons. But it can be frustrating when we get used to things being one way and then they change. Because change is hard. But this update? There’s nothing hard about it. If you ask me, it’s all good.
